JoS: The future of VBA and other old-school MS technology

"Visual Basic for Applications and OLE automation are still present in Office
and Windows. But, apparently, Microsoft is no longer adding new features.
What comes after VBA, which was killed off in Mac Office?"

JoS: The Future of MS Access

"I stumbled upon a few articles/message board postings on the future of MS
Access which sounded somewhat compelling for those of you interested in
MS Access."

Slashdot: The Future of C++ As Seen By Its Creator

"In a rare public talk, C++ creator Dr. Bjarne Stroustrup discusses his ideal
in programming languages, as well how he sees the next version (and beyond)
of C++ developing. He explains the general selection criteria used for adding
new features, some of the legacy of C++, and many other interesting topics.
Especially interesting is during the Q&A he explains his views of the embrace
and extend mentality some implementations, such as VC++, have taken."

JoS: Which Will Die First...?

"VBA or VB 6?

... I stumbled upon this announcement recently made by Microsoft:

JoS: Is MS-Access "future-proof"?

"The main problem with Access is however speed and number of concurrent
users. I use MDB files a lot with ADO/ASP and it works fine, but only for small
projects, where the size of the MDB doesn't become more that 10-20 MB, and
where I don't expect many concurrent users."

Slashdot: The Fine Line Between Security and Usability

"Where should vendors be required to draw the line when supporting
deprecated file formats and technology? In a recent case independent
security researcher cocoruder found a critical bug with the JET engine,
via the .mdb (Access) file format.

He reported it to Microsoft, but Microsoft's response came as a surprise
to him — it appears that Microsoft is not inclined to fix a critical arbitrary
code execution vulnerability with a data technology that is at the heart
of a large number of essential business and hobby applications."

Slashdot: VBA Going Away, Macs Now, PCs Soon

"As Microsoft drops support for older Office file formats, it looks like Visual
Basic for Applications is also going soon. Mac Office 2008 has dropped VBA
in favor of enhanced support for AppleScript, and Office 2009 is scheduled
to lose it in favor of Mac incompatible Visual Studio Tools for Applications
(VSTA) or Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO). This sounds like the Mother
of All Backwards and Cross-Platform Incompatibilities — especially since
there appears to be no transition period where both the old and new
scripting languages will be simultaneously supported. And as past experience
with Visual Studio .NET has shown, upgrade tools are far less than perfect."

Stroustrup and Sutter: C++ to run and run

"There was a time in the late 1990s and early 2000s when they simply stopped
advertising C++ sessions at this conference," Sutter told attendees. "And yet
they found a curious thing: every year for four years, C++ was the strongest
track at the show. With zero advertising! That says something about the market.

That says that there are problems that C++ is solving."
