WP, Sally Squires: To Produce Good Health, Bite Into Fruit and Veggies

"Eating more fruit and vegetables sounds like a no-brainer, the kind of
common-sense advice that mothers have dished out for generations.
Now, 21st-century scientists are beginning to fathom why these foods
provide so many benefits."

Paul Krugman - Supply, Demand, and English Food (index)

"For someone who remembers the old days, the food is the most startling
thing about modern England. English food used to be deservedly famous
for its awfulness--greasy fish and chips, gelatinous pork pies, and dishwater
coffee. Now it is not only easy to do much better, but traditionally terrible
English meals have even become hard to find. What happened?"

time.com - Declining Fruit and Vegetable Nutrient Composition

"As Davis points out, more than three billion people around the world suffer
from malnourishment and yet, ironically, efforts to increase food production
have actually produced food that is less nourishing. Fruits seem to be less
affected by genetic and environmental dilution, but one can't help but won-
der how nutritionally bankrupt veggies can be avoided. Supplementing them
is problematic, too: don't look to vitamin pills, as recent research indicates
that those aren't very helpful either."

Lifehacker: Grow 100 lbs. of Potatoes in 4 Square Feet

"We're big fans of growing delicious food in little spaces. We've shown you
how to grow tomatoes in a self watering planter, turn your fence into a
ve getable trellis, and start a container garden. Now we've got a great tip to
share, courtesy of The Seattle Times, on how to grow a lot of potatoes in a
rather small space."

Massive fish fraud: That filet may not be what you think

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=1012&sid=24211325

According to a nationwide survey from Oceana, fish fraud is rampant in the United States, with all but the most easily identifiable fish mislabeled and sold as something that it's not. Of the more than 1,200 samples collected from the nation's major metropolitan areas, one third were mislabeled.

yahoo.com - The next superfood is here and it's called moringa

"Moringa has incredibly nutritious qualities—it has 3.5 times the calcium
of milk and 4 times the vitamin C of oranges, says David Wolfe, author of
Superfoods. All you have to do is open the bag and let the good nutrients
roll.

A recent analysis of the leaves found that moringa contains more vitamin
A than carrots, more iron than spinach, and more potassium than bananas.
It also packs as much protein as milk or eggs."

Y - My Family Stopped Eating Sugar for a Year and This is What Happened

"My body seems to be thanking me for it. I don't worry about running out of
energy. And when flu season comes around I somehow no longer feel the
urge to go and hide with my children under the bed. But if we do come down
with something, our bodies are better equipped to fight it. We get sick less
and get well faster."

finance.yahoo.com - The Big Fat Lie We’ve Been Fed About Our Diet

"Then there’s fructose. It’s found naturally in fruits but is also a main
component in table sugar. The high-fructose corn syrup in many foods
messes up your cholesterol markers. It causes the liver to make trigly-
cerides and other lipids in the blood, which have a greater effect on your
propensity to get heart disease. The combination of glucose and fructose
packs a disease-promoting punch."

"We show that this decline is apparent regardless of habitat type, while
changes in weather, land use, and habitat characteristics cannot explain
this overall decline. This yet unrecognized loss of insect biomass must
be taken into account in evaluating declines in abundance of species
depending on insects as a food source, and ecosystem functioning in the
European landscape."

The great nutrient collapse

What Loladze found is that scientists simply didn't know. It was already well documented that CO2 levels were rising in the atmosphere, but he was astonished at how little research had been done on how it affected the quality of the plants we eat. For the next 17 years, as he pursued his math career, Loladze scoured the scientific literature for any studies and data he could find. The results, as he collected them, all seemed to point in the same direction: The junk-food effect he had learned about in that Arizona lab also appeared to be occurring in fields and forests around the world.

y - Drinking up to 5 cups of coffee a day has no long-term dangers and
could even reduce risk of chronic illness, according to a review of 95
studies on coffee-drinkers

"Coffee is associated with a wide range of health benefits, including a lower risk
of obesity, since the caffeine it contains can boost metabolism and intensify the
calorie-burning power of the digestive system.

... Caffeine can also increase mental focus and also benefit brain health,
particularly as we age -- caffeine appears to be linked to a decreased risk of
Parkinsons. Coffee, in moderation, is also linked to a lower risk of depression
and suicide."

davyandtracy.com - Isn't Blending Fruits And Vegetables In A Green Smoothie Improper Food Combining?

"The mixing of fruits with vegetables, or protein with carbohydrate, has not
been scientifically established as a cause or contributing factor in vitamin and
mineral malabsorption.

An often cited criticism of food combining is that foods themselves have
differing amounts of macronutrients that supposedly should not be combined.
For example, beans contain a combination of carbohydrates and protein. Meat
and eggs contain a combination of protein and fat. All fruits and vegetables
contain varying ratios of carbohydrate, protein and fat."

Michael Greger M.D. - Do Smoothies Cause Overly Rapid Sugar Absorption?

"What would happen, though, if you put those four and a half cups of sliced
apples in a blender with some water and pureed them into an apple smoothie?
Despite still having all the fiber, it still caused that hypoglycemic dip. The
rebound fall in blood sugars, which occurred during the second and third hours
after drinking juice and puree, 'was in striking contrast to the practically steady
level after eating apples.' This finding not only indicates how important the
presence of fiber is, but also perhaps whether or not the fiber is physically
disrupted, like in a blender."

Y! - Is Zinc Really That Good for You?

"Zinc supports the immune system by regulating the function of several key
components [in the body], such as macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer
cells, and T-lymphocytes ...

Zinc is [also] important for wound healing.

It plays an important role in a range of brain functions, including learning,
memory, mood, and behavior, according to Dr. Mafee.

Y! - Lying down and vomiting between courses: This is how Ancient Romans would feast

"They had bizarre culinary habits that don't sit well with modern etiquette,
such as eating while lying down and vomiting between courses, Franchetti
said.

These practices helped keep the good times rolling. Given banquets were a
status symbol and lasted for hours deep into the night, vomiting was a
common practice needed to make room in the stomach for more food. The
ancient Romans were hedonists, pursuing life's pleasures, said Jori, who is
also an author of several books on Rome's culinary culture."
