JoS: HTTP vs FTP for software updates
"I have a nice little FTP set of code in VB (actually, it VBA). This code uses
the wininet.dll…and has a call back for progress bar (thus the download can
be canceled by the user, and if the internet connection is “broken” etc, then
I can time out gracefully…." |

TheList - Mac OS native 3rd party software update mechanism
"I would like to move also to MAC and I wonder if there is some MAC- native
Software Update capable of updating third party applications (best would be
from binary diffs).
I've read something about Software Update and if I understood right, it can
update only software considered to be part of the OS itself." |

And a few moments later: Doing application updates via version-control
"I just had an interesting idea, brought on by a post to an Apple developer
list asking about software-update mechanisms for Mac applications. The
library everyone uses for this is Sparkle, which is wonderful in all ways
except bandwidth usage: it updates the app by downloading an entire zip
archive of the new version." |

Google - Update Engine
"Update Engine is a flexible Mac OS X framework that can help developers
keep their products up-to-date. It can update nearly any type of software,
including Cocoa apps, screen savers, and preference panes. It can even update
kernel extensions, regular files, and root-owned applications. Update Engine
can even update multiple products just as easily as it can update one." |

P.S. Sparkle,
Andy Matuschak - Sparkle
"Sparkle is an easy-to-use software update framework for Cocoa developers.
Sparkle requires no code in your app, so it's trivial to upgrade or remove the
module." |
