Slashdot: The Birth of a FOSS Application

"Brice Burges explains why and how he created a new free software
application, as well as what he learned from the birthing process, in a
story on Linux.com. The story provides first-hand insights into the
frustrations and satisfactions of developers working on free/open source
projects. From the article: 'I'm always disappointed to hear open source
project members say that they had "their developer" modify an aspect of
the program without ever hearing from that developer or seeing any of
the code. This is not progressive.'"

Slashdot: Management 'Scared' by Open Source

"A discussion panel at EclipseCon exposed how managers are freaking out
over open source. Apparently a disconnect exists between managers who
set corporate open source policies and developers supposed to follow them,
but who end up covering their tracks to make it seem like they are not using
open source. Developers, though, end up using open source because of its
ubiquity and not using it 'puts them at a competitive disadvantage because
their competitors are.' And the Lawyers are in a panic."

Digg: Linux, open source software pay off for PayPal

"When Scott Thompson left Visa to take the CTO role at PayPal in 2005, the
Web company's data centre surprised him. "Wait a minute," he recalls saying,
"they run a payment system on Linux?"

"I was pretty familiar with payment systems and global trading systems, but
I just scratched my head when I came here," Thompson says. With his history
of working on IBM mainframes and large Sun Solaris systems, the PayPal
approach to computing seemed alien, especially for a company whose core
mission was dealing with money."

CUPS - Common UNIX Printing System

the standard printing system in Mac OS® X and most Linux® distributions.

CUPS uses the Internet Printing Protocol ("IPP") as the basis for managing
print jobs and queues and adds network printer browsing and PostScript
Printer Description ("PPD") based printing options to support real-world

Slashdot: Etoile Project Releases Mac-Like Environment

"Today the Étoilé Project released v0.2 of its Desktop Environment. Not only
does Étoilé share user interface similarities with Mac OS X, Étoilé enjoys some
source-level compatibility with Mac OS X as well.

Many here undoubtedly remember NeXT, the revolutionary computer / dev
environment that gave rise to the first Web browser and later became the
foundation of Mac OS X. Étoilé uses the FSF's own implementation of the NeXT
development environment, GNUstep, making this a close technological relative
of OS X. Screenshots and a source tarball are available."

Compile Software from Source Code

"... with the popularity of open-source software, where the source code is
available for one and all to read and enjoy, the final step of compiling the
code into a runnable program is left up to the user. It needs to be compiled
specifically for the type of system it'll run on, and maintaining separate
binaries for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X Tiger, Panther, Linux
x86, and all the rest is a bother."

IBM Challenges Microsoft with Free Office Suite

"Reuters is reporting that IBM plans to announce a free, downloadable office
suite today in a direct challenge to Microsoft. The news comes only a week
after IBM announced they were joining OpenOffice.org and dedicating 35
developers to the project. IBM is resurrecting an old name for this brand
new software: Lotus Symphony.

The new Symphony, based on Open Office, is yet another product to support
Open Document Format (ODF), the ISO standard for universal document
interchange. There are about 135 million Lotus Notes users, and they will
also receive Symphony free. IBM support will be available for a fee. There
are no details yet about platform support, but IBM is supporting Lotus Notes
8 on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows, so at least those three are likely."

git - Official Objective-C SDK for the Dropbox API v2

"The Official Dropbox Objective-C SDK for integrating with Dropbox API v2
on iOS or macOS."

git - Dropbox: Migrating from API v1

"If your app was originally using an earlier API v1 SDK, including the iOS
Core SDK, the OS X Core SDK, the iOS Sync SDK, or the OS X Sync SDK,
then you can use the v2 SDK to perform a one-time migration of OAuth 1
tokens to OAuth 2.0 tokens, which are used by API v2. That way, when you
migrate your app from the earlier SDK to the new API v2 SDK, users will not
need to reauthenticate with Dropbox after you perform this update."

db - API v1 -> v2 Migration guide

"Migration checklist for developers:

* Check whether you need to migrate your user's access tokens or re-
authenticate with a new permission.
* Familiarize yourself with the new v2 syntax. Read up on the patterns of
v2 endpoints, do a tutorial for an SDK, and test-drive v2 calls with your
own data in the API Explorer.
* Figure out which v1 endpoints your app uses, and look up the equivalent
ones in API v2 using our v1 → v2 mapping table.
* Update your app's code, replacing API v1 calls with API v2 calls.
* If there's functionality missing in v2, update what you can, and support
the rest with a hybrid integration. Also, please file a support ticket with us
about the missing functionality, so we can keep track of feature requests.
* Update the error handling in your app to utilize v2 errors."

git - Windows File Manager (WinFile)

"The Windows File Manager lives again and runs on all currently supported
version of Windows, including Windows 10. I welcome your thoughts,
comments and suggestions. There are two primary versions of the source
code in the master branch:

original_plus tag: refers to the source for WinFile as of Windows NT4 with
minimal changes so that it compiles with Visual Studio and runs on current
Windows.

current master: contains my personal changes / additions to WinFile."

r - bittyhttp: threaded library for building rest services in C

"Each request is handled in its own thread so some care needs to be taken
when writing handler logic. This is the biggest drawback to ease-of-use, but

gitlab - 6502js But C

"For programmers, the OS layer contains an example on how to use X11,
Cocoa/Quartz2D or Win32 to draw stuff without a library like SDL2. See for
programmers for more info.

windows.c, linux.c, and mac6502/mac6502/mac.m contain working examples
of how to create a window, receive user input and draw rects using Win32, X11
(via XCB/XKBCommon) and Cocoa/Quartz2D.

If you need, for example, a working example of how to use Cocoa/Quartz2D
with a custom game loop, how to get input via XCB/X11 and XKBCommon, or
how to deal with multiple OSes in general, I hope my code can help you out,
because that information was hard to find."

git - Sloth

"Sloth is a native Mac app that shows all open files, directories, sockets, pipes,
and devices in use by all running processes on your system. This makes it easy
to inspect which apps are using which files, etc."

git - Cosmopolitan

"Cosmopolitan Libc makes C a build-once run-anywhere language, like Java,
except it doesn't need an interpreter or virtual machine. Instead, it
reconfigures stock GCC and Clang to output a POSIX-approved polyglot format
that runs natively on Linux + Mac + Windows + FreeBSD + OpenBSD +
NetBSD + BIOS with the best possible performance and the tiniest footprint
imaginable."

For an introduction to this project, please read the actually portable executable
blog post and cosmopolitan libc website. We also have API documentation.

darlinghq.org - Darling

"Darling runs macOS software directly without using a hardware emulator.

That sounds a lot like Wine

And it is! Wine lets you run Windows software on Linux, and Darling does the
same for macOS software. Another similar project is Anbox, for Android apps."

git - Compile a library for iOS 4.3 using its configure script

"ios-configure runs a "configure" script using the iOS 4.3 SDK, generating
a static library that will load and run on your choice of iPhone, iPad, and
their respective simulators."

so - Compiling external C++ library for use with iOS project

"The best way then to deal with this is create a build script which will do all the
work for you. This way, it's easier to redo. More importantly, you can reuse the
script or permute it to build other external libs.

There are many ways you can build the script. Here is one."

#!/bin/bash

git - CWebStudio

"CWebSudio is a micro framework to deal with web aplications in C/C++. It's
a single header library that provides a lot of functionality such as reading
headers, query parameters, returning files, and text."

"... Working with URL parameters is very easy, as seen in the following
example ... To iterate through parameters, the object CwebDict may be
used like this ... Cweb Studio also supports url parameter encoding. To do
so, call the method request->read_content to parse the body... Similar to
iterating through URL parameters, iterating through headers is equally as
simple ... Accessing the body content may be done by calling the function
request->read_content. The content will be accessible with request->content
and request->content_length ... CwebStudio has cJSON integrated into the
library ... if you want to return values from cJSON, you can call the
cweb.response.send_cJSON_cleaning_memory or cweb.response.
send_cJSON to return cjson values ... Returning plain text is simple with
cweb_send_text ... To return rendered HTML, the function
cweb_send_rendered_CTextStack_cleaning_memory may be used. Memory
will be automatically cleaned ... To generate HTML from a file, the
cweb_send_var_html function may be used ... As is done with returning
plain text, memory will be automatically cleaned with cweb_send_
var_html_cleaning_memory ... Files can be directly returned by referencing
the path ... Static files (javascript/css/html) can be referenced and returned
in the static directory ... CWEB_DEBUG will provide useful debugging
information...
