What's in a Name: "Domania" rules the World Wide Web

"A broker of Internet domain names lists "billgates.com" for sale for $1
million. I'm told the name, an Internet address, has been advertised for
months but remains unsold.

Perhaps I should be flattered that somebody imagines the name is worth
so much, especially since my parents gave me the same name 42 years
ago for free."

Slashdot: Get on the 'Gates for President' Bandwagon

"Dilbert's Scott Adams kicked off the idea in his November 19th blog post,
saying there isn't anything wrong with this country that President Bill Gates
couldn't cure in less time than it takes to get a new operating system out
the door. Today, the idea is moving forward with a brand-new 'Bill Gates
for President
' Web site. Adams is also back on the campaign trail, flogging
the site and Gates' candidacy."

Tom Evslin: Microsoft Memories

"Boop stood for billg plus the office of the president (real presidents didn’t
last very long there). The oop consisted of steveb (Steve Ballmer) and
mikemap (Mike Maples). Major decisions were sometimes made by the boop.

If you see that your dead wrong – you may be, he’s very smart – best to
admit it immediately and move on. But, if he’s wrong – which is also often
the case – then you CAN’T give in. You will be just as much blamed for doing
the wrong thing because billg told you to as you will be if you did it all on your
own. This is the moment of truth for a Microsoft manager."

Slashdot: 20 Years of Bill Gates Predictions

The Seattle PI's Microsoft Blogger Todd Bishop asks "How does Gates shape
up as a seer?" None strike me as particularly clairvoyant, but the missed ones
are winners: "I believe OS/2 is destined to be the most important operating
system, and possibly program, of all time." and "Two years from now, spam
will be solved." But in fairness to Gates, for many years Microsoft's tagline
was "a PC on every desktop and in every home."

Slashdot: Jobs and Gates Chat Amicably

"As noted, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs met at the D conference yesterday.
AllThingsD has video of the entire convivial and historic meeting — check
the highlights clip. When a reporter asked if their rivalry was overblown,
Jobs offered up this joke: 'We've kept our marriage secret for over a
decade' — to an apparently flummoxed Gates.

Other tidbits: 'His mother loves him!' said Gates about PC Guy in the famous
series of commercials. 'And we love them because they're all customers!'
said Jobs about Microsoft employees working on Zune who use the iPod.
Read more about the event, which also covered a lot of serious ground,
such as Apple's iPhone, at CNN and the Times Online."

Slashdot: Bill Gates Denied Visa To Nigeria

"It seems that Nigeria recently denied Bill Gates a visa to travel there on his
recent trip to Africa. The initial denial was "on the premise that they required
proof he would not reside in Nigeria indefinitely, causing a strain on social
services and a general nuisance for immigration." The comments to the post
are worth reading too."

Programmers At Work - Bill Gates–1986

"You obviously have a lot of responsibilities as chief executive officer of
Microsoft. Do you still program?

GATES: No, I don’t. I still help design algorithms and basic approaches, and
sometimes I look at code. But since I worked on the IBM PC BASIC and the
Model 100, I haven’t had a chance to actually create a program myself."

Slashdot: Bill Gates's Last Speech

"Bill Gates, in an address to the TechEd Developers conference, talked about
Microsoft's plans for hosted services, and revealed that the company is plan-
ning data centers on 'a scale that we haven't thought of before' that will ap-
parently enable the company to offer all of its server-based products over
the Internet. The talk did not include details in terms of capacity or scale.

This was Gates's final publicly scheduled speech as a full-time Microsoft em-
ployee, and he acknowledged that Microsoft's success is 'due to our relation-
ship with developers.' On July 1, he will start spending most of his time at
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation."

in an interview that it wasn't just what Microsoft did, but what his rivals didn't
do that let Microsoft get ahead."

reddit - Bill Gates quits Facebook - "All these tools of tech waste our
time if we're not careful."

"Gates, the billionaire computer geek-turned-philanthropist who was honou-
red Saturday by India for his charity work, told an audience in New Delhi he
had tried out Facebook but ended up with '10,000 people wanting to be my
friends'."

Slashdot: Bill Gates Remembers 1979

"Last week Gizmodo had a special celebration of 1979, the last year before a
digital tsunami hit, that put Bill Gates in a nostalgic mood this week. Bill chi-
med in with his own memories of that seminal year when everything chang-
ed."

"Over the weekend, Groklaw discovered a couple of interesting e-mails

ken by surprise by Apple's launch of the iTunes Music Store in April 2003."

/. - The Most Widespread COVID-19 Conspiracy Theories Target Bill Gates

"The first mention of a baseless conspiracy connecting him to the outbreak
was on Jan. 21, according to the Times analysis. That was when a YouTube
personality linked to QAnon suggested on Twitter that Mr. Gates had
foreknowledge of the pandemic. The tweet was based on a coronavirus-related
patent from the Pirbright Institute, a British group that received funding from
the Gates Foundation. The patent was not for Covid-19; it was connected to a
potential vaccine for a different coronavirus that affects poultry. But two days
later, the conspiracy website Infowars inaccurately said the patent was for 'the
deadly virus.' The idea spread."
