How does a traffic light detect that a car has pulled up and is waiting for the light to change?

"There are all sorts of technologies for detecting cars -- everything from
lasers to rubber hoses filled with air! By far the most common technique is
the inductive loop. An inductive loop is simply a coil of wire embedded in the
road's surface."

360 in a circle, 60 minutes and 60 seconds… What is so special about 60?

"Simple Answer: Blame the Babylonians - they used the Sexagesimal
system. Don’t get excited - it means that instead of using base 10 (as we
do) they used base 60. You can read more about it on wikipedia."

A typical residential burglary

"After being at the scene of literally thousands of burglaries during my
experience with the RCMP and Provident, I have found that the vast
majority of burglaries are nearly identical, making it relatively easy to
anticipate and prevent one at your home."

Digg: How Do Airplanes Avoid Each Other?,

TCAS System Explained

"A comedian once said: "The odds of two planes being in the exact
same point in the sky at the exact same time are mathematically
impossible.... which is why we channel them into these small lanes,
thus making the need for air traffic controllers."

Obviously the odds are increased around airports, and they didn't create
air channels specifically to create the role of AFC, but it's still a pretty
interesting thought."

Digg: How to: Make a Ringtone From any MP3

"Google up "ringtones" and you'll get tons of sites that will charge you a
few bucks per tone. Pshaw! With some free software and a few minutes,
you can make as many custom ringtones as your heart desires out of any
MP3 in your music collection without paying a dime. Here's how."

Why do the British drive on the left?

"In the Middle Ages you kept to the left for the simple reason that you never
knew who you'd meet on the road in those days. You wanted to make sure
that a stranger passed on the right so you could go for your sword in case
he proved unfriendly."

straightdope: Why are firehouse dogs usually dalmatians?

"The English found the dalmatian physically fitted for road work, according
to the Dalmatian Club of America. The spotted pup has the "strength, vitality,
fortitude and size to keep running along under the carriage for hundreds of
miles."

howstuffworks.com - How Police Interrogation Works

"A little glaring, some getting in the guy's face, a revelation that his finger-
prints are all over the murder weapon and voilà! He's recounting his crime.
In real life, police interrogation requires more than confidence and creativity
interrogators are highly trained in the psychological tactics of social influence."

Raymond Chen: What's the row of numbers on the copyright page of books?

"As Dave Taylor explains, the smallest number tells you which printing of
the book you have. For example, if you see "10 9 8 7 6 5 4" then you have
a fourth printing. Dave doesn't explain why printers use this convention,
however."

If blue, red, and yellow are primary colors, why do color TVs use blue, red, and green?

"When using the additive method, the primary colors are red, blue, and
green. The more additive primaries you add, the lighter the resultant color.
Mix all three and you get white. The subtractive primaries are red, blue,
and yellow -- to be exact, magenta, cyan (light blue), and yellow."

it print out badly? Check out the in-depth comparison between A4 and US
Letter. Amazing to see how similar the two are, yet how much they differ.

reddit - How fascism works

"In the real world, fascism is when the corporations and governments
work as a single entity, and you can wander around with your fucking
gun all you want. In fact, you'll have to wander around, because the
government/corporations took your house and your car, and no one
will hire you."

r - Most of What You Read on the Internet is Written by Insane People

"If you read reviews on Amazon, you're mostly reading reviews written by
people like Grady Harp. If you read Wikipedia, you're mostly reading articles
written by people like Justin Knapp. If you watch Twitch streamers, you're
mostly watching people like Tyler Blevins. And if you read YouTube comments,
you're mostly reading comments written by people like Justin Young. If you
consume any content on the Internet, you're mostly consuming content created
by people who for some reason spend most of their time and energy creating
content on the Internet. And those people clearly differ from the general
population in important ways."
