Good intro by Joel Spolsky: Language Wars

"How do you decide between C#, Java, PHP, and Python? The only real
difference is which one you know better. If you have a serious Java guru
on your team who has build several large systems successfully with Java,
you're going to be a hell of a lot more successful with Java than with C#..."

And this mega thread: How much harder is Windows C API than C#/.NET?

"You have got to friggin kidding. Only a complete idiot would start a new
project in XX6.

Michael"

The complete top 50 of programming languages: TIOBE Programming Community Index

"The TIOBE Programming Community index gives an indication of the
popularity of programming languages. The index is updated once a
month. The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled
engineers, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines
Google, MSN, and Yahoo! are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that
the TPC index is not about the best programming language or the
language in which most lines of code have been written."

Programming Language Trends, by Tim O'Reilly

"I wrote yesterday about the rise of Ruby and Javascript, driven by the
move towards Web 2.0 applications. Also worthy of note in these graphs is
the long, slow decline of Java and C/C++, and the continuing rise in market
share of C#."

Funny version: Programmer Hierarchy and something funny too,
but informative at the same time: Language ranking with *.* logic

"So there you have it, just like we all knew, Logo, the "Lisp without the parentheses", rules! Smile"

Big boys continue play C++ in their products

"IMO Wine's day is about to come, as it has just entered beta with v0.9.
The promise of being able to take a C/C++ app that runs under Windows,
and compile, link and run the same source under Linux is compelling
(assuming Wine works Smile)"

10 Programming Languages You Should Learn Right Now

"Don't get fixated on one or two languages. When I started in 1969,
FORTRAN, COBOL and S/360 Assembler were the big tickets. Today,
Java, C and Visual Basic are. In 10 years time, some new set of
languages will be the 'in thing.' …At last count, I knew/have learned over
24 different languages in over 30 years," Wayne Duqaine, director of
Software Development at Grandview Systems, of Sebastopol, Calif., told
eWEEK.

comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.win32: C++ vs Java

Petter Hesselberg: "Each language is pretty good, with C++ reigning
supreme in anything to do with systems programming. Java is touted as
being cross platform; in the real world, this is only marginally true --
Virtual Machine implementations differ, browser versions differ in the
programming model they offer the Java programmer, bugs are different,
APIs are different, and so on. "

Similar subject, same place: C++ or Java???? Which is best? Please respond

"No contest, C++ wins hands down.  Java is the slowest language ever,
because it must be translated into machine specific code before it can be
used.  IT is even slower than Visual Basic.  Java really can't even make
Windows programs.  C++ is just much faster and more powerful than Java
will probably ever be."

Google Directory

So, what's the point of these numbers? Is lisp with 471 at the time of this writing more popular than C with 314 or even pascal with 99?

Digg: How to Shoot Yourself in the Foot in Any Programming Language

Unix
% ls
foot.c foot.h foot.o toe.c toe.o
% rm * .o
rm: .o: No such file or directory
% ls
%

That is beautiful... especially because you ARE shooting yourself in the foot
while trying to shoot yourself in the foot.

Can your language do this redux

"Yup.  The STL can have a very functional flavor. That said, the cumbersome
syntax, unsafe type system, and inscrutable error messages keep making
me want to stab myself in the eye with a sharpened pencil."

Programming Jokes or maybe Programming Theorems

"f you boast about how quickly you developed your
product, people will complain about its performance. (Rails)

If you boast about how well your product runs, people will
complain about its development time. (Vista)

If you don't boast about either, people will assume you are
developing in Java."

JoS: Why they hate java so much (and possibly .net)

"Software in particularly suffers from wholesale reinvention on each
technical cycle. It seems necessary to completely divorce new technology
from old, because one way of selling new technology is to frame the old
technology as broken and problematic, and the new technology as the
solution. "

Slashdot: Top 10 Dead (or Dying) Computer Skills

Among the comments: "But you're forgetting the reason COBOL is dying
is because the tech industry is moving away from the machines and operating
systems that make use of COBOL. C will not die in the next half century
because the tech industry is moving closer towards technologies that are
built on C like GNU/Linux. If anything, C will become more prevalent.

In the next fifty years I imagine C's role more or less becoming that of
the "mother language". 90% of the time everyone will be using higher
level languages like Perl, Ruby, and Haskell on their Linux computers, all
of which are programmed in C. Programmers will only need C when they
need to change their lower level system tools, or to write new ones that
perform very efficiently.

The only way I can see C dying is if a kernel comes along with a Linux
compatible system interface that's written in a language suited better to
the massively parallelized CPUs of the future. And once the kernel moves
away from C, applications are bound to follow."

Programming Language Popularity

"Programming languages are a particular area of interest. Selecting a language
involves many factors, and certainly isn't something that can be considered
in a vacuum.

Of course, it's important to pick something that can do the job correctly and
efficiently, but depending on what you need to accomplish, and who you
have to work with, the availability of external libraries, people to help you
out, or even to hire you or be hired by you can all be important factors to
weigh."

What is the role of language in learning programming?

(Part 2 of "What makes programming so hard?")

"Eric Roberts of Stanford has observed that the downturn in interest and
enrollment in CS came at the same time that the predominant introductory
language in the U.S. moved from Pascal to C++ and then Java."

reddit: New Java vs C benchmarks

"Saying that C is generally several times faster than java is - according to
those benchmarks - simply wrong. If you’re allowed to choose the fastest
JVM the worst case for java was 30%. In other benchmarks Sun and JRockit
were even able to beat ICC."

"The article '13 reasons why Ruby, Python and the gang will push Java to die...

What really makes a language 'good'? What is success for a programming

Python, etc?"

uf - Why aren't we programming in Objective C ?

"In a recent interview with Mark Shuttleworth, my eyes bugged out when
I caught him wondering why Objective C wasn't used more in the open-source
world.
In the recent past, thinks like NextBuntu were proposed and got a little bit
of traction, but I think that we got caught up in GnuStep and Apple, and not
striving to seek our own path with Objective C. Surely these two could provide
guidlines, but I'm wondering with the amount of talent I've seen here, instead
of just trying to duplicate what has already been done,..."

reddit - Real men program in C

"If you accept from the evidence I've presented here that C shall remain im-
portant for the foreseeable future and that embedded software is of ever-in-

are smart and talented computer scientists, my younger friends don't know
how to competently program in C. And they don't care to learn."

reddit - Ask Reddit: Why does everyone hate Java?

"For several years I've been programming as a hobby. I've used C, C++,
python, perl, PHP, and scheme in the past. I'll probably start learning Java
pretty soon and I'm wondering why everyone seems to despise it so much.
Despite maybe being responsible for some slow, ugly GUI apps, it looks like
a decent language."
