Free Software Foundation: iPhone restricts users, GPLv3 frees them
"June 29 marks the release of version 3 of the GNU General Public License
(GPL). Version 2 of the GPL governs the world's largest body of free software;
software that is radically reshaping the industry and threatening the proprietary
technology model represented by the iPhone." |

It has begun…iPhone on eBay
"I swore to myself I wasn’t going to write about the iPhone. After all,
there’s enough hype about it already. It seems as if you can’t go to a
single website without reading about how great it is and how you can’t
afford one." |

Even Apple's co-founder is standing in line for an iPhone
"Steve Wozniak arrived at the Apple store at Valley Fair Mall in San Jose
at 4 a.m. to begin the wait wearing a button that read, "The line starts here.
Woz #1."
In fact, he hadn't been the first to show up but in deference, Apple fans
stepped aside to give him the first space." |

AT&T Activation Clumsiness hurts iPhone
"Apple may be smooth and polished, but AT&T has botched the great iPhone
rollout. These are some of the frequent errors that people are experiencing.
It is so bad that the AT&T web and phone support have shut-down at this point." |

Video of iPhone Touch Typing: Day 1
"OK, it's just Day 1. Whether I turn out to be a Mossberg (typing is 'a nonissue')
or a Levy ("Maybe I'm a spaz") remains to be seen, but on my very first outing
it took me a while just to type a simple text message."

the lines forming to get an iPhone grow steadily bigger. Send an iPhone

3G iPhone for Europe to be announced Monday?
"Oh man, here we go. Another rumor about that 3G European iPhone. This
time, the source is Guy Kewney of Newswireless who doubles as eWeek.com's
European wireless editor -- i.e., he's the real deal. As the story goes, Apple
is set to announce a four-way deal." |

Internal Apple Stevenote: iPhone, iPods with OS X, and "off the charts" Mac
"Steve Jobs spoke to the entire company on the eve of the iPhone launch
about the gravity of the iPhone and what it means to the company. He also
alluded to some crazy things coming down the pipeline, such as new Macs
that are "off the charts" and hinted at iPods with OS X."

"According to ThinkSecret, Steve Jobs held a company-wide town hall
today and announced that Apple employees will get free 8GB iPhones
this July. This applies to all full-time Apple employees as well as part
time employees who have been with Apple for more than 1 year." |

10 Things that "Absolutely suck" about the iPhone
"The overall lack of a [visible] filesystem, and web-browser limitations.
I want to be able to download things from the web on my phone (ringtones
from indie bands, content-creations from Mobile17 or band-promotions at
Mozes, images from websites that I want to save and open later on my desktop)
Why did I pay for 8GB of space that I can't friggin use! Is this a joke?" |

Slashdot: AT&T Vs. Apple Store At the iPhone Launch
MBCook tips an article at Gizmodo that begins with a reader's experiences
trying to buy an iPhone yesterday at an AT&T store and an Apple store.
Many, but not all, of the comments on the post echo this reader's experience:
Apple good, AT&T bad. "Day one revealed what all Apple aficionados fear.
That AT&T, through the depths of its incompetence, could derail the iPhone." |

Slashdot: Apple iPhone Dissected
"Only hours after the launch, the Apple iPhone has been dissected. The good
folks at AnandTech violated one of the first iPhones to still our curiosity about
whats inside the aluminum shell. 'Please note that we're doing this so you are
not tempted to on your recent $500/$600 expenditure, while it is quite possible
to take apart using easy to find tools we'd recommend against it as it will
undoubtedly void your warranty and will most likely mar up the beautiful
gadget's exterior.'" |

Slashdot: No iPhone For 64-Bit Windows
"After buying a new iPhone yesterday and bringing it home to sync and
activate it, I found out that Windows 64-bit is not supported. Neither XP
64-bit nor Vista 64-bit works with the iPhone. I called the Apple support
line and the rep said I needed to downgrade my computer from a 64-bit
operating system. I also posted about my concerns on the Apple iPhone
discussion forums, but my post was quickly removed." |

Slashdot: Activation Problems in iPhone Paradise
"Unfortunately it appears that some activations of Apple's new iPhone have
gone badly. After waiting in line 36 hours I'm still unable to activate my
phone.
I'm documenting the AT&T circus call by call on my blog. I've had my
hold calls dropped, been patched into other users unable to activate their
phone instead of AT&T customer service reps, been told that my wife
must get a new phone and that the family plan can't work for me. I've
been told that the problem is that I'm not putting a new chip into my
iPhone in the slot on the left side of my phone when no slot there exists.
PR Blogger Steve Rubel has also been documenting his problems on his
Twitterstream. According to an unscientific poll being conducted by
Engadget about half of the people who bought iPhones have had activation
trouble with about 38% of problems still unresolved." |

still at 14,386 iPhone news stories in the last 24 hours, which remains about
double that of the XBox 360 at its launch and is certainly higher than any other
consumer electronics launch we've tracked." |

Curious gadget fans smash, dissect iPhones
"Opening the iPhone was the easy part. For many, the real prize is hacking
the phone to get it to do things Apple never intended, such as run on networks
other than that of AT&T Inc., the exclusive U.S. service provider.
Some programmers also want to find a way to run their own programs directly
on the phone's operating system rather than being limited to programs run
through the Web browser." |

iPhone Root Password Cracked
"The root and another "mobile" account password of iPhone OSX 1.0, have
been obtained from a passwd file and been cracked by the famous fellows

Ars Technica: Let a million iPhones bloom
"Apple needed one thing in order to get the iPhone off the ground: a carrier.
Apple got its carrier, and the carriers got precious little beyond that moment
of clarity. Sure, short term, AT&T gets a big bump in contracts. But long term,
the carriers will get to sit back and watch as Apple absorbs every remaining
shred of value in the market." |

Apple: We'll Only Help You With Your iPhone After It's Too Late To Return It
"Darin's iPhone was defective, so he tried to return it to the AT&T store
where he purchased it. No dice. AT&T told him that Apple was responsible
for the device. When Darin tried to exchange the phone with Apple, they
told him he'd have to deal with AT&T for the first 14 days." |

Slashdot: iPhone Battery Replacement An Unwelcome Surprise
"Apple has released what it will cost to replace the battery in the iPhone,
and consumers might be a bit put off. Replacement is a tricky ordeal, as
the battery is apparently soldered into the device. The service will cost $79,
plus $6.95 for shipping, plus an optional $29 'loaner iPhone' rental.
A consumer advocacy group sent a letter to Apple complaining that this
information was not made public before iPhone's release since the cost of
the battery replacement is so high. Even reviewer Walt Mossberg, who is
usually very kind to Apple, was quoted as saying 'some of them might be
waking up now, wondering who they got in bed with.'" |

bgr - Apple's secrets: How Apple's legal fight with Samsung revealed a gold mine of top-secret information
"Following a contentious patent battle that raged on for nearly five years,
Samsung last week finally agreed to pay Apple $548 million in damages for
infringing upon a number of iPhone and iPad patents. While Samsung may
still be holding out hope that it may someday recover those millions, it seems
that we can finally start closing the book on the most widely publicized patent
dispute in recent memory, one which saw Apple and Samsung battle it out in
