Slashdot: Secret Printer ID Codes May Be Illegal In the EU

"In response to a query from a member of the EU Parliament, an EU
commissioner issued an official statement (.DOC) saying that, while
they do not violate any laws, secret printer tracking dot codes may
violate the human right to privacy guaranteed by the EU's Convention
of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

If you don't remember what these are, Slashdot has discussed the issue
before. In short, most color printers print small yellow dots on every sheet
in a code that identifies the printer and, potentially, its owner. The EFF is
running an awareness campaign, and a couple of years back made a start
on deciphering the yellow dot code."

theatlantic.com - Even Bugs Will Be Bugged

"Even those of us who don't control large corporations have reason to
worry about surveillance, both licit and illicit. Here's how governments,
terrorists, corporations, identity thieves, spammers, and personal enemies
could observe us in the future, and how we might respond."

ars - What could happen if you refuse to unlock your phone at the US border?

"DHS says agents are in the right to ask for passwords, decryption help.

Ars spoke with several legal experts, and contacted CBP itself (which did not
provide anything beyond previously-published policies). The short answer is:
your device probably will be seized (or 'detained' in CBP parlance), and you
might be kept in physical detention - although no one seems to be sure
exactly for how long."

wired - How Email Open Tracking Quietly Took Over the Web

"I wrote Cook a lengthy email detailing the reasons he should join me for an
interview. When I didn't hear back, I drafted a brief follow-up, enabled Streak,
hit send. Hours later, I got the notification: My email had been read. Yet one
glaring detail looked off. According to Streak, the email had been read on a
Windows Desktop computer."
