Digg: Handbrake now supports H.264 at 640x480 for iPod
"Handbrake now supports H.264 at 640x480 for iPod. Previous versions
were not able to produce such output in a format the iPod would recognize.
The new universal binary test version now supports this. File name is just
HandBrake.zip and was released on January 1, 2007." |

Slashdot: How Apple Kept the iPhone Secret
"Bogus prototypes, bullying the press, stifling pillow talk — all to keep iPhone
under wraps. Fortune's Peter Lewis goes inside one of the year's biggest tech
launches. One of the most astonishing things about the new Apple iPhone,
introduced yesterday by Steve Jobs at the annual Macworld trade show, is
how Apple managed to keep it a secret for nearly two-and-a-half years of
development while working with partners like Cingular, Yahoo and Google." |

Slashdot: No Third-party Apps on iPhone Says Jobs
"In an interview with the New York Times, Steve Jobs confirms reports
that the recently-announced iPhone will not allow third party applications
to be installed. According to Jobs, 'These are devices that need to work,
and you can't do that if you load any software on them.' In a similar vein,
Jobs said in a MSNBC article that, 'Cingular doesn't want to see their West
Coast network go down because some application messed up.'" |

Slashdot: Inside the iPhone — 3G, ARM, OS X, 3rd Partyware
"After heading off the top ten myths of the iPhone, Daniel Eran of
RoughlyDrafted has written a series of articles looking 'Inside the iPhone,'
exploring (1) why Apple didn't target faster 3G networks, (2) a
substantiated look at how the iPhone is indeed running OS X (contrary to
reports that it isn't), and (3) what it means to users and developers, and
how ARM is involved, in Mac OS X, ARM, and iPod OS X, and why the
supposedly 'closed' system Apple describes for the iPhone won't preclude
third party development." |

Digg: How To Fix an iPod that Won’t Boot
"There ’s a conspiracy theory that Steve Jobs wants you to buy a new
iPod every 12 months. That may or may not be the case, but if your iPod
is hosed, it doesn ’t necessarily mean it’s time to put it out to pasture." |

Slashdot: No iPhone SDK Means No iPhone Killer Apps
"Although it has a 1 GHz ARM chip which sounds fast, that is not a PC CPU,
it lacks stuff we take for granted on PC's, Apple had to use LLVM to emulate
some PC stuff, and to get 5 hours of battery and no first-degree burn on
your palm, you have to use the device pretty much as Apple intended, so
that their optimizations hold, same as AppleTV. As far as I can tell, there
is no Adobe Flash in iPhone because Flash video requires a full PC, that is
always required to decode a software codec." |

NY Times: If an iPod costs $299, who gets that money?
"Who makes the Apple iPod? Here ’s a hint: It is not Apple. The company
outsources the entire manufacture of the device to a number of Asian enterprises,
among them Asustek, Inventec Appliances and Foxconn. But they only do
final assembly. What about the 451 parts that go into the iPod? Where are
they made and by whom?" |

digg - Old Zune Getting All The New Features
"The old Zune is getting all the new features. All. Microsoft's did something
fantastic here and rewarded the believers who purchased Zunes in the first
year by allowing them to get in on all the cool new stuff without having to
pay more. Are you paying attention Apple? This is how you should treat your
customers." |

Slashdot: Origin of the iPhone
"Steve Jobs had tasked about 200 of Apple's top engineers with creating the
iPhone. Yet here, in Apple's boardroom, it was clear that the prototype was
still a disaster. It wasn't just buggy, it flat-out didn't work. The phone dropped
calls constantly, the battery stopped charging before it was full, data and
applications routinely became corrupted and unusable. The list of problems
seemed endless. At the end of the demo, Jobs fixed the dozen or so people
in the room with a level stare and said, 'We don't have a product yet.'
The effect was even more terrifying than one of Jobs' trademark tantrums.
When the Apple chief screamed at his staff, it was scary but familiar. This
time, his relative calm was unnerving. 'It was one of the few times at Apple
when I got a chill,' says someone who was in the meeting." |
