Gretchen Rubin: The Happiness Project
"I'm working on a book, THE HAPPINESS PROJECT--a memoir about
this year, during which I'm testing every principle, tip, theory, and
scientific study I can find, whether from Aristotle or St. Therese or Martin
Seligman or Oprah. I’m gathering these rules for living from everywhere
I can, and I’ll report what works and what doesn’t. This happiness blog is
part of my larger project."
"In 1820, English writer Sydney Smith wrote a letter to an unhappy
friend, Lady Morpeth, in which he offered her tips for cheering up. His
suggestions are as sound now as they were almost 200 years ago." |

The Invisible Grip
"WHEN I WAS VERY SMALL, my dad could always tell when I was lying.
When I was about six years old, he told me God whispered it to him. Even
though the guy never went to church or seemed particularly religious, I
had to respect that. He had an in with God. I wanted to hear it. I figured if
I knew when it happened, the precise moment, I'd hear the voice of God, too." |

The Hidden Side of Happiness
Hurricanes, house fires, cancer, white-water rafting accidents, plane
crashes, vicious attacks in dark alleyways. Nobody asks for any of it. But
to their surprise, many people find that enduring such a harrowing ordeal
ultimately changes them for the better. Their refrain might go something
like this: "I wish it hadn't happened, but I'm a better person for it." |

The Great Shampoo Scandal
"Shampoo, being detergent, can rinse out of your hair fine even in alkaline
water. That's its only good point. Its fundamental, but covered up, bad point
is that it's very harsh, and damages your hair permanently. Conditioner was
soon introduced as people noticed that shampoo sucked the oils out of their
hair dry and left it all dry and brittle." |

Working Four Days a Week
"For over six months now I have been working four days a week instead
of the usual five. When I started, I was unsure how it would go, and how long
I would be able to maintain it. After experiencing the four-day work week, I
must say that I am very pleased with it and plan to continue it indefinitely.
I heard recently that research by psychologists has shown that people
working a four-day work week report on average higher levels of overall
life satisfaction, particularly concerning their work-life balance. This matches
my experience." |

Yahoo News: Happier — not just for a day or two, but long-term.
Every night, she was to think of three good things that happened that
day and analyze why they occurred. That was supposed to increase her
overall happiness.
"I thought it was too simple to be effective," said Miller, 44, of Bethesda.
Md. "I went to Harvard. I'm used to things being complicated." |

How the Power of Imagination can Alter Your Brain
"For what the TMS revealed was that the region of motor cortex that
controls the piano-playing fingers also expanded in volunteers who imagined
playing the music - just as it had in those who actually played it." |

Why Intelligent People Tend To Be Unhappy
"Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know", Ernest Hemingway
"Education systems in countries whose primary interest is in wealth accumulation
encourage heroes in movies, war and sports, but not in intellectual development.
Super intelligent people manage, but few reach the top of the business or social
ladder." |

Slow Down Culture
"I’ve noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other
cars in the lot.” To which he replied, “Since we’re here early we’ll have time
to walk, and whoever gets in late will be late and need a place closer to the
door. Don’t you think? Imagine my face." |

The View from 90
"The concepts about age in relation to human beings has taken a remarkable
turnabout about within the past 30-odd years. When I was in my 40s, every-
one, including myself, thought of me as middle aged." |

Banistra - Dobrodošli u Istru! (CRO)
"Istru nazivaju muzejem na otvorenome, rudnikom prepunim vrijednim
blagom, višestrukim svijetom gdje je sve duplo, troduplo, od jezika do
kultura, od arhitekture do krajolika." |

Wired - Does Money Make You Unhappy?
* Our poor intuitions about the pursuit of happiness are a genuine para-
dox. Daniel Kahneman summarizes decades of happiness research this
way: “It is only a slight exaggeration to say that happiness is the experi-
ence of spending time with people you love and who love you.” The prob-
lem, of course, is that we don’t spend our money in accordance with this
psychological principle. Instead, we squander cash on positional goods,
saving up for Rolex watches, Louis Vuitton luggage and Prada T-shirts.” |

edge.org - A Short Course In Thinking About Thinking
"The puzzle is related to the affective forecasting that most people believe
that circumstances like becoming richer will make them happier. It turns
out that people's beliefs about what will make them happier are mostly wr-
ong, and they are wrong in a directional way, and they are wrong very pre-
dictably. And there is a story here that I think is interesting." |

Tamara Star - 7 Habits of Chronically Unhappy People
"Throughout the years, I've learned there are certain traits and habits
chronically unhappy people seem to have mastered. But before diving in
with you, let me preface this and say: we all have bad days, even weeks
when we fall down in all seven areas." |

TED - The surprising science of happiness
"Dan Gilbert, author of "Stumbling on Happiness," challenges the idea that
we'll be miserable if we don't get what we want. Our "psychological immune
system" lets us feel truly happy even when things don't go as planned." |

r - What are signs that someone is secretly unhappy?
"These things could mean someone is secretly unhappy: * Not smiling
much. * Just going along with what everybody else thinks without voicing
their own opinion. * Low energy. * Tiredness. * Changes in appetite.
* Faking their mood to appear happy * Doing impulsive things (perhaps
to distract them) * Addictions to things (perhaps to keep them happy)
* Putting down others/negative comments * Always seeking attention
(may be neglected/lonely). * Desperate to talk to you (lonely maybe)" |

aeon.co - Why read Aristotle today?
"At his Lyceum in Athens, Aristotle developed a model for the maximisation of
happiness that could be implemented by individuals and whole societies, and
is still relevant today. It became known as 'peripatetic philosophy' because
Aristotle conducted philosophical debates while strolling in company with his
interlocutors." |
