medium - Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are perfect as the unlikely
duo in Shane Black's 'The Nice Guys'

"It's a story that we've seen a thousand times before. The unlikely duo of
private eye and enforcer trying to clean up the mess of seedy Hollywood.
We've seen it as an action movie, as a comedy, and as a drama. So Shane
Black had a huge task ahead of him trying to find an original angle of his
screenplay."

"What Shane Black works to perfection in The Nice Guys is the way he is
playing off our expectancies as the audience. He knows that we have seen
movies like this before, so he has to do something new in order to stand
out from the herd of buddy comedies. He twists almost all scenes. They
start in one direction and then slowly moves in completely other direction."

At 20, 'The Fifth Element' is still out of this world

"It was 20 years ago, on 7 May 1997, that the world first saw Bruce Willis in
a backless neon T-shirt and Milla Jovovich with matching orange hair. Standing on
the cusp of the digital effects revolution, the flick combined nascent computer-
generated imagery with old-school practical effects -- and it still looks fantastic.
It was a glorious mess and an international hit, and it inspires fans and
cosplayers to this day."

imgur.com - The abandoned set of The Abyss (1989)

"The Abyss is a 1989 film by James Cameron. The idea for the film came to him
when he was 17. He was inspired to write it as a short story during a science
lesson in High School about the first human to breathe fluid through his lungs.
During the film there is a scene where this technology is demonstrated on rat.
The rat was actually breathing through liquid during the filming of the scene."

bbc - The Big Sleep: The most baffling film ever made

"All these decades later, the film's judgemental Wikipedia entry tuts that it 'is
impossible to follow', and is celebrated by 'movie-star aficionados' only because
'they consider the Bogart-Bacall appearances more important than a well-told
story'."

r - I watched every movie with an F Cinemascore to see if audiences were right - were there any misunderstood gems?

"Overall, the movies fell into five main categories that explain their F ratings:

Secretly worth your time, but divisive or subverts expectations: mother!, Bug,
Wolf Creek, Killing Me Softly, In The Cut.

Let down by a bad ending: Dr T and the Women, Silent House, The Turning,
The Grudge

Entertaining for the wrong reasons: I Know Who Killed Me, The Wicker Man,
Alone in the Dark, Eye of the Beholder

Boring: Darkness, Solaris, Lost Souls, The Box, Lucky Numbers

Irredeemably terrible: The Devil Inside, Disaster Movie, Fear Dot Com, Bolero."

Y! - A 1980s Comedy Broke Box-Office Records Worldwide. Then Disappeared. The Story Behind It Is Stunning.

"Once one of the most popular movies in South Africa's history, it's now seldom
discussed in the country and unavailable on either of the nation's two primary
streaming networks. And in America, where theaters once played it so long
they wore out the film, it might as well be invisible -- if you'd like to watch it,
you'll need to buy a DVD, if you can imagine."

theringer.com - The Future of Film May Just Be Old Movies

"Theater chains are looking for more product, he says. The number of releases
has gone down, so they're just all looking for something fresh and interesting
that will get people to show up. Which ironically, increasingly, is something old
they've seen before -- a return to the type of film and film-going experience
that was once commonplace."
