Slashdot: Microsoft Makes Testing IE6 and 7 Easier

"Finally, Microsoft has made steps to make testing IE6 and IE7 easier for
Windows users. Previously, you had to pay for an additional Windows
license to legally run both versions of IE for testing purposes. Now Microsoft
is making available free Windows XP/IE6 images available for VirtualPC
(also free as MS is competing with VMWare). This means that you can run
IE6 in a virtual machine while running IE7 on your host machine. The
drawback is that the download is set to expire April 2007 ... although we are
promised new versions will be released. What Microsoft doesn't mention is
that Virtual PC also runs on Windows 2000 (and IE7 doesn't). Therefore it's
possible to install this Windows XP VPC image on your Win2k machine. You
can then update IE6 on the XP image to IE7, testing IE7 without upgrading
from Win2k. This is all-around excellent news for web developers."

with one ascribing the change in policy to concerns over DRM. A piece at
Ars Technica raises another, more likely possibility: fear of Apple. Apple
is technically an OEM, and could offer copies of Vista at a discounted
price. 'All of this paints a picture in which Apple could use OEM pricing to
offer Windows for its Macs at greatly reduced prices and running in a VM.

The latter is absolutely crucial; telling users that they need to reboot into
their Windows OS isn't nearly as sexy as, say, Coherence in Parallels. If
you've never seen Coherence, it's quite amazing. You don't need to run
Windows apps in a VM window of Vista. Instead, the apps appear to run
in OS X itself, and the environment is (mostly) hidden away.

Installing Mac OS X Server 10.6.3 on Fusion 4.1.4?

On the host, launch Disk Utility.  Insert the Snow Leopard Server disc into the drive.  In the left pane of Disk Utility, select the optical drive, which will have a name like SuperDrive or perhaps a manufacturer/model number like HL-DT-ST DVD/RW – although it might be tempting to do so, you should not select the name of the optical media itself (Install Snow Leopard Server or something like that) which will appear just below that... It is very important to select the CD/DVD drive and not the inserted media, or you'll get a disc image that will get stuck at the Apple logo.

This issue occurs because Mac OS X Server versions earlier than 10.6.4 do not support the i5, i7, Nehalem, or Westmere processors.
 
You cannot install OS X Server version 10.6.3 or earlier on a physical mac with one of those processors or on a virtual machine running on a Mac with one of those processors.
 
To work around this issue, use one of these options:
Use an installation disk with Snow Leopard 10.6.4 or later.
Create the virtual machine on a different Mac and run Apple Software Update. After OS X 10.6.4 is installed, move the virtual machine to the Mac with the i5, i7, Nehalem, or Westmere processor.
Add this line to the .vmx to mask the CPU before attempting to install or update. Once the install/update is complete, remove the line from the .vmx.
