Readers Digest: How Polite Are We?

"The Top Three: New York, Zurich, Toronto.

And then Berlin, Sao Paulo and Zagreb sharing the 4th place!"
Paris
was LAST!

The question: To which country should I immigrate?

Someone said: "Pick any of these: Canada, New Zeland, Ireland, Holland,
Norway, Denmark, Island, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Monaco."
, but
others think all of these places are bad as well. There's not an easy answer.
People are all the same. Until something happens and then you realize
how strange some places really are.

JoS: What is Google in Dublin like?

"Dublin is much like London these days, in terms of culture and diversity.
Like any other big city it's very busy, the traffic is a nightmare, and there's
a constant stream of people who seem to be in an insane rush and don't
have a second to waste. I really wish people would chill out... but I digress."

Why the Rich Get Richer: Learning from the Best, by Robert Kiyosaki

"Now that our book, Why We Want You to Be Rich, is out, I can tell you
what working with Donald Trump has been like.

I know many people don't like Donald because he comes across as a
tough guy. That's their problem. In spending time with him, I realized that
I wasn't as successful as I could be simply because I wasn't tough enough.

One of my problems is that I'm very impatient and get angry too quickly.
I believe Donald can be the same. Yet I saw him be patient, kind, and
respectful in many situations that would have caused me to lose my patience.

When I asked him about this trait, he simply said, 'One of the most important
lessons my parents taught me was to treat all people with respect, even if
I'm angry with them.' "

What Time is Dinner?

"Everyone in medieval England knew that you ate breakfast first thing in
the morning, dinner in the middle of the day, and supper not long before
you went to bed, around sundown. The modern confusion arose from chang-
ing social customs and classes, political and economic developments, and
evenfrom tech ological innovations."

Research Links Lead Exposure, Criminal Activity

"Most of the theories have been long on intuition and short on evidence.
Nevin says his data not only explain the decline in crime in the 1990s, but
the rise in crime in the 1980s and other fluctuations going back a century.
His data from multiple countries, which have different abortion rates, police
strategies, demographics and economic conditions, indicate that lead is
the only explanation that can account for international trends."

cracked.com - 7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable

"Scientists call it the Naked Photo Test, and it works like this: say a photo
turns up of you nakedly doing something that would shame you and your
family for generations. Bestiality, perhaps. Ask yourself how many people
in your life you would trust with that photo. If you're like the rest of us, you
probably have at most two."

Slashdot: Magnetism Can Sway Man's Moral Compass

"Discovery News reports that scientists have identified a region of the brain
which appears to control morality and discovered that a powerful magnetic
field can scramble the moral center of the brain, impairing volunteers' notion
of right and wrong. 'You think of morality as being a really high-level beha-
vior,' says Liane Young, a scientist at MIT and co-author of the article. To be
able to apply (a magnetic field) to a specific brain region and change peo-
ple's moral judgments is really astonishing."

y - Competitive advantage for leaders comes from surprising trait

“Our study suggests that a ‘quieter’ leadership approach -- listening, being
transparent, aware of your limitations and appreciating co-workers strengths
and contributions, is an effective way to engage employees,” Johnson and
fellow researchers Bradley Owens and Terence Mitchell write in the study.

quartz - A philosopher's 350-year-old trick to get people to change
their minds is now backed up by psychologists

"When we wish to correct with advantage, and to show another that he
errs, we must notice from what side he views the matter, for on that side
it is usually true, and admit that truth to him, but reveal to him the side
on which it is false. He is satisfied with that, for he sees that he was not
mistaken, and that he only failed to see all sides. Now, no one is offended
at not seeing everything; but one does not like to be mistaken, and that
perhaps arises from the fact that man naturally cannot see everything, and
that naturally he cannot err in the side he looks at, since the perceptions of
our senses are always true."

imgur - I analyzed the demographics of the largest Western European cities and came to some interesting conclusions.

"Do these cities attract young adults because they are prosperous and thriving
or are they prosperous and thriving because they host many young adults?"

r - Megathread: Abortion in America

"If you're interested in a history of abortion outside the United States, this
post by u/Kelpie-cat provides a recounting of abortion in Ireland. This post by
u/Sunagainstgold gets into abortion in Europe during the Middle and early
modern Ages. Likewise, this response also gets into abortion in the Middle
Ages. This question about Assyrians and abortion got several answers. Finally,
this answer from u/ Georgy_K_Zhukov focuses on abortion in the Soviet
Union."
