Microsoft bought Winternals Software, founded by Mark Russinovich and Bryce
Cogswell. Mark Russinovich is co-author of the book Microsoft Windows Internals.
PC World: Microsoft Sucks Up Sysinternals
"You may remember that Russinovich is the guy who discovered and
publicized Sony's disastrous rootkit DRM scheme on music CDs, something
that had apparently been on the market for months without anyone finding
out. The tech world will always have smart, unbiased watchdogs, but
especially now, as technology interests become more and more subsumed
by business interests, we can use as many as we can get." |

His biography on Wikipedia:
"In 1996, Russinovich discovered that the difference between the
workstation and server editions of Windows NT comprised solely two
values in the Windows Registry."
"On October 31, 2005 Russinovich published his discovery of the rootkit
behavior of Extended Copy Protection, an implementation of Digital Rights
Management on many Sony BMG audio CDs."
"In January 2006, Russinovich again came to public attention when he
analyzed the Windows Metafile vulnerability in Windows." |

Digg: REALLY want to know what's happening in your system?
"Sysinternals has made available a great new tool called Procmon that
combines the features of two older Sysinternals utilities: Filemon and
Regmon, and adds much more. You can use this tool to monitor very
closely what's happening on a system, as it happens." |

Slashdot: Mark Russinovich On Vista Network Slowdown
"In his latest blog post, Mark Russinovich analyzes the network slowdown
experienced by some users when playing multimedia content. 'Tests of MMCSS
during Vista development showed that... heavy network traffic can cause
enough long-running DPCs to prevent playback threads from keeping up with
their media streaming requirements, resulting in glitching.
MMCSS' glitch-resistant mechanisms were therefore extended to include
throttling of network activity. It does so by issuing a command to the NDIS
device driver... [to] pass along, at most 10 packets per millisecond (10,000
packets per second)... [T]he networking team is actively working with the
MMCSS team on a fix that allows for not so dramatically penalizing network
traffic, while still delivering a glitch-resistant experience.'" |
