Why you should be excited about Ubuntu 7.10
"Notice that three of them are interrelated? Graphics, graphics, graphics.
This is the major blockade that ’s keeping Linux from moving more swiftly
on to the desktop. Thankfully with the new X.org (7.3) which will begin to
make appearances in Gutsy (7.10) will go a long way towards fixing this
issue." |

Using VirtualBox to run Ubuntu and any other operating system
"VirtualBox is free software. It is cross-platform (Windows, GNU/Linux, with
an Intel Mac version in beta). It runs Windows, OS/2, GNU/Linux, BSD, Netware,
Solaris, and L4 guests. And on certain guests, you can install VirtualBox Guest
Additions, which lets you share files and more between the guest and the host.
The next version, coming soon, will include support for running the pre-built
VMWare appliances." |

Digg: Official Ubuntu Linux Forums gain 400 members per day
"Just this week I was trying to find a lightweight distro for an old laptop I
use, and I found it very hard to move away from Ubuntu and its derivatives,
just because of the community at Ubuntuforums.org and the large wiki
many of the members support.
If you use Ubuntuforums, then you know that you will never have problems
with anything in linux, or at least for not more than a few minutes. There
are SO MANY experienced members there to help you, and all the members
there become better linux users, who then help other new linux users." |

Sporadic Nonsense: Tip: Ubuntu & Parallels Desktop
"Once at the edit screen, click on the Video preference and add a custom
resolution of 1280x800 then click Ok. Next go ahead and fire up Ubuntu
and once it loads navigate to your system folders and head to the /etc/X11/
directory and find a file called xorg.conf..." |

be used for web surfing occasional word processing, etc. Essentially very low CPU

The Official Ubuntu Book (2nd Edition), by Benjamin Mako Hill, Jono
Bacon, Ivan Krstic, David J. Murphy, Jonathan Jesse, Peter Savage & Corey
Burger.
I bought this book just to see what's all the fuss about Ubuntu lately. It all
appears as massive see change, paradigm shift and everything else needed
to put Linux in mass circulation. I think I'll spend some time with GTK in the
near future, but before I even start installing things on my computers, I'll do
some browsing of this book.
EDIT: Review of the book on Slashdot by Craig Maloney

Walt Mossberg: Ubuntu - Linux’s Free System Is Now Easier to Use,
But Not for Everyone
"Dell and Canonical tell me there are complex workarounds for some of the
problems I encountered, and that built-in improvements are planned for
others. But for now, I still advise mainstream, nontechnical users to avoid
Linux." |

Digg: Looking for Ubuntu 7.10 for PPC Macs, IBMs and the Sony PS3?
"Here is where to get either the Desktop or Alternate Install CD ISOs for Apple
Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks, IBM
OpenPower machines, Intel Itanium and Itanium 2 computers, as well as Sony
PlayStation 3 systems. Submitted since it is about impossible to find from the
main Ubuntu.com home page." |

Slashdot: Ubuntu Dev Summit Lays Out Plans For Hardy Heron
"On the first day of the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Boston this week, a
roundtable session focused on the vision for the upcoming Hardy Heron
Ubuntu release. Unlike Gutsy Gibbon, which brought a handful of experimental
features along with some new functionality, the focus with Heron will be on
robustness as it will be supported on the desktop for 3 years.
'The Compiz window manager, which adds sophisticated visual effects to the
Ubuntu user interface, will be a big target for usability improvements.
Keyboard bindings and session management were noted as two areas where
Compiz still needs some work.' PolicyKit and Tracker will also be significantly
tweaked, while Heron is also likely to see a complete visual refresh." |

Ars: We're only Human after all: a review of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon
"Ubuntu 7.10, codenamed Gutsy Gibbon, emerged from the jungles last month
and has been beating its chest ever since. Touted as the easiest-to-use desktop
Linux distro yet, 7.10 hopes to bring the power of Linux to the masses." |
