How do I add an icon to a C program?

"So, to facilitate all that, you first need a resource file, which can be as simple as:
Code:
#include "resource.h"

IDI_ICON ICON "icon.ico"

Save that with an .rc extension and add it to your project's Resource Files folder.

There's a problem with Microsoft's resource compiler (which bizarrely still
hasn't been fixed after several service packs) that makes it fail to recognize
the end of file condition unless there's an empty line at the end. I don't know
whether this has been fixed in later releases."

Apple Developer Connection: Icon Genres and Families

"Applications are classified by role—user applications, software utilities,
and so on—and each category, or genre, has its own icon style. This
differentiation is very important for helping users easily distinguish
between types of icons in the Dock.

For example, the icons for user applications are colorful and inviting,
while utilities have a more serious appearance."

IconLib: Icons Unfolded (MultiIcon and Windows Vista supported)

"Before I started IconLib, I had no clue about how icons work, but was
not before I found an excellent article. Although it is out of date with the
coming of Windows Vista icons, it is very precise in explaining how Icons
format files work."

"The NE Format is the popular format to store icon libraries. This format
originality was used for Executables on the 16-bit version of Windows.

You can get more information for NE format from the Microsoft web site."

Pic2Icon

Pic2Icon is a program that creates beautiful 128×128 Mac OS X icons
from your pictures. Simply drop pictures or folders full of pictures onto
the application and it will start creating icons.

These icons will be applied to the pictures, so you can browse through
them in the finder and you will be able to identify them without having
to open them!

smashingmagazine.com - 20+ Free And Fresh Icon Sets

"User-friendly icon sets are always nice to look at and useful to have ready
to hand. Since effective designers guide their users’ attention using visuals,
icons can (and probably should) be used in almost every project you are or
will be working on.

Whether for an illustration, sketch, site or weblog - used moderately, icons
can point users’ attention to the key-aspects of an article or specific site
sections and communicate the message of the site in a more effective way."

of GNOME where running programs can have a icon"

uncommonplace.com - Icon Machine

"Icon Machine is a native icon editor for Mac OS X icons, capable of editing in
all color sizes and depths. You can draw the icons yourself using the built-in
array of standard tools, or import images from an application such as Adobe
Photoshop.

Masks are easy - if you paste from an application like Adobe Photoshop, the
mask is automatically imported as well. And while you're drawing, the image
and mask are automatically kept in sync."

github.com - DigiDNA/ICNS2ICO

"ICNS2ICO lets you easily convert icons from the Apple's ICNS format to the
Windows ICO format.

Since Windows Vista, ICO files may contain PNG encoded representations, up
to 256x256 pixels (Windows XP used BMP). So all applications generate PNG
representations when generating icons larger to 32x32."

im - Apple, Big Sur, and the rise of Neumorphism

"Neumorphism has been making the rounds on Design Twitter for a little while
now, and most of the response to it has been negative. There are plenty of
valid criticisms out there, primarily that early design experiments were focused
on design differentiation and not actual usability. But if you look beyond specific
implementations we've seen thus far -- usually created by designers whose
focus is formalism as opposed to usability -- to the base concepts, there is
something that's actually quite exciting and sustainable; something that has
yet to be fully realized."
