Is Steve Jobs Bill Gates 2.0?
"Bill Gates learned early on that controlling the platform is the key to
future profits. Steve Jobs 2.0 gets that very well. The iTunes and iPod
control of the digital media/convergence markets is quit akin to the
Windows domination of the PC business. Microsoft knew that the profits
were in selling software an applications and not the hardware, and they
let everyone else duke it out in the PC market." |

September 23, 1985: Apple Sues Steve
"On the one hand, the company had taken all responsibility away from
Jobs, indicating strongly that he was incompetent. On the other hand,
they were now suing a supposedly blatant incompetent for being savvy
enough to grab key employees. Logic never stops a decent lawsuit and
Apple sued Steve Jobs this day in 1985." |

Wired: Steve Jobs' Best Quotes Ever
"The CEO of Apple Computer is a master of hype, hyperbole and the
catchy phrase. Even when he's trying to talk normally, brilliant verbiage
comes tumbling out." |

Digg: What meetings are like with Steve Jobs
"An executive briefing always looks, on paper, like a clash of titanic egos.
From what I saw, most wilt quickly in Steve's presence. And customers'
reverence for him usually overwhelms any hostility." Sounds like a good
time." |

Digg: Forbes says: Apple's Steve Jobs a 'Cult Celebrity Billionaire Mastermind'
"Then there is nerd-fame. Perennially clad in a uniform of black turtleneck
and jeans, Steve Jobs enjoys cultish celebrity status among fans of Apple,
the computer company he founded in 1976. Jobs, worth $5.7 billion, has
been touted as a creative mastermind..." |

Digg: How Steve Jobs Calls the Tunes
"Steve Jobs' new partnership with EMI to sell music without copy protection
is a lesson in how to wield power in the digital age. Carefully and strategically,
Jobs set up the pieces to create a new business model for online music - one
without copy protection - and now we're starting to see the dominos fall." |

marketwatch.com - Bill Gates, Steve Jobs set for historic conversation

briefly shared a stage at a 1983 Apple event, the two industry icons have

With success, a kinder, gentler Steve Jobs
"At the D Conference today, twice he gave glimpses of the new Steve Jobs
that stood out from his pontifications about iPhone, Apple TV, and the industry
at large. He joked, he threw punch lines, and he was even nice to Bill Gates." |

NY Mag: Steve Jobs in a Box
"Somewhere in the neighborhood of a billion cell phones are sold worldwide
every year; in terms of scale, ubiquity, and relevance, it’s the mother of all
consumer-electronics markets. The chance to upend this sprawling industry,
bend it to his will, is one that Jobs, being Jobs, finds irresistible." |

Enjoying the show, avoiding the flamethrower: life inside Apple
"What's it like working inside Apple when the MacWorld announcements are
made? The man who set up many of its email systems and worked there 17
years explains the inside story of the preparation, the unveiling – and why
it's sometimes best to avoid Steve Jobs." |

ting his role in the remaking of multiple industries and propelling Apple to
continued success despite difficult economic conditions. As part of the featu-
re, Fortune profiles Jobs and offers an interactive timeline of major Apple

Wired - Steve Jobs: The Next Insanely Great Thing
"When you're young, you look at television and think, There's a conspiracy.
The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little
older, you realize that's not true. The networks are in business to give peo-
ple exactly what they want. That's a far more depressing thought. Conspira-
cy is optimistic! You can shoot the bastards! We can have a revolution! But
the networks are really in business to give people what they want. It's the
truth." |

Derek Sivers - The day Steve Jobs dissed me in a keynote
"iTunes had just launched two weeks before, with only some music from the
major labels. Many of us in the music biz were not sure this idea was going
to work. Especially those who had seen companies like eMusic do this exact
same model for years without big success." |

"Friend: Wow, what an unusual ring.
Mrs. Jobs: I know, isn't it cool?
Friend: Yeah. Where did you get it?
Mrs. Jobs: My husband made it when he was in India. It's my engagement ring. I always wear it.
Friend: Wow. It's beautiful.
Mrs. Jobs: (holds hand up, looks at ring) Yeah, I know." |

The Atlantic - In Praise of Bad Steve
"Steve Jobs was a genius, and one of the most important businessmen and
inventors of our time. But he was not a kindly, soft-spoken sage who might
otherwise live atop a mountain in India, dispatching wisdom to pilgrims. He
was a taskmaster who knew how to get things done." |

Harvard Political Review - Assessing Steve JobsBy (by Jonathan Yip)
"Jobs was famous for never consulting market research or focus groups. He
was never afraid to take risks in moving his products and headstrong vision
forward. Time and time again he angered his users, ditching floppy disks,
DVD drives, and Adobe Flash. He unveiled a phone with no keyboard when
every smartphone had a keyboard. He released a tablet after Microsoft had
failed for a decade with its own tablets. Each time, users came around to
Jobs’ concept, understanding and ultimately benefiting from decisions that
they disagreed with. You might call that leadership." |

reddit - Steve Jobs Headlines Everywhere =( RIP - (imgur)
"I've collected a bunch of headlines all over the web that dreadful night. This
pretty much tells the scope and effect his death means around the World.
I especially like Panic, Wired and Boing Boing's special attention to the news.
Note that even iPhone Dev Team is also paying their tribute." |

fastcodesign.com - Steve Jobs Almost Named The iMac The MacMan,
Until This Guy Stopped Him
"I’d like to believe we were all so smart that within seconds we were con-
vinced that we were witnessing the start of a miracle resurgence. But it
wasn’t quite like that. Later, when the agency team was alone and able to
share the thoughts we felt at that moment of reveal, we found that we all
had pretty much the same feeling. It was part shock, part excitement, and
part hope that Steve Jobs really knew what he was doing--because there
was a real chance that this revolutionary computer might just be too shock-
ing for its own good." |

nyt - And Then Steve Said, ‘Let There Be an iPhone’
"Jobs rarely backed himself into corners like this. He was well known as a
taskmaster, seeming to know just how hard he could push his staff so that
it delivered the impossible. But he always had a backup, a Plan B, that he
could go to if his timetable was off." |

daringfireball - Courage
"When we think of controversial decisions, we tend to think of both sides as
creating controversy. Choose A and the B proponents will be angry; choose
B and the A proponents will be angry. But when it comes to controversial
change of the status quo, it's not like that. Only the people who are opposed
to the change get outraged. Leave things as they are and there is no
controversy. The people who aren't outraged by the potential change are
generally ambivalent about it, not in a fervor for it. Strong feelings against
change on one side, and widespread ambivalence on the other. That's why
the status quo is generally so slow to change, in fields ranging from politics
to technology." |

nyt - And Then Steve Said, 'Let There Be an iPhone'
"Grignon knew the iPhone unveiling was not an ordinary product announce-
ment, but no one could have anticipated what a seminal moment it would
become. In the span of seven years, the iPhone and its iPad progeny have
become among the most important innovations in Silicon Valley's history." |
