Two weeks ago I bought a hat made of microfiber. Micro means small.
Very small! And then I started thinking about it. What happens if some of
that fiber goes into my lungs? Are these things small enough to enter
where other materials can't? Can they enter my blood system?

Well, here is a Slashdot story: Facing the Dangers of Nanotech

"Technology Review has a Q&A with Andrew Maynard, the science
advisor for the Woodrow Wilson International Center's nanotechnology
project regarding the dangers of nanomaterials and why we have to act
now."

"Individual experiments have indicated that if you develop materials with
a nanostructure, they do behave differently in the body and in the
environment. We know from animal studies that very, very fine particles,
particles with high surface area, lead to a greater inflammatory response
than the same amount of larger particles. We also know that they can
enter the lining of the lungs and get through to the blood and enter other
organs. There is some evidence that nanoparticles can move into the
brain along the olfactory nerve, so this is completely circumventing the
blood-brain barrier."

Top 5 Reasons Breakfast Is a Must for Kids

"How many times have you heard, "breakfast is the most important meal
of the day"? Here's why, in terms of small-fry. Kids who eat breakfast:

1. Do better in school;
2. Have more focus and concentration, more energy, and better eye-hand
coordination;
3. Have fewer behavioral problems;
4. Are more likely to meet their nutritional needs overall;
5. Have an easier time staying at a healthy weight."

"Most doctors, within the first 18 seconds of seeing a patient, will interrupt him

bijeli sljez, crni sljez, trputac i islandski lišaj .

Slashdot: Some Soft Drinks May Damage Your DNA

"The Independent is reporting new findings that indicate a common
additive called sodium benzoate, found in soft drinks such as Fanta
and Pepsi Max among others, has the ability to switch off vital parts
of DNA in a cell's mitochondria. From the article: 'The mitochondria
consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it — as
happens in a number of diseased states — then the cell starts to
malfunction very seriously.

And there is a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to damage
to this DNA — Parkinson's and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases,
but above all the whole process of aging.' European Union MPs are now
calling for an urgent investigation in the wake of these alarming new
findings."

In fact, I never eat junk food.

was a problem. My total cholesterol was around 400, and my triglycerides,
which are really affected by diet and exercise, were 600 to 700. A healthy

slashdot - Why Doesn't Exercise Lead To Weight Loss?

"The New York Times' Well blog reports that 'for some time, researchers
have been finding that people who exercise don't necessarily lose weight.'
A study published online in September 2009 in The British Journal of Spo-
rts Medicine was the latest to report apparently disappointing slimming
results. In the study, 58 obese people completed 12 weeks of supervised
aerobic training without changing their diets. The group lost an average of
a little more than seven pounds, and many lost barely half that. How can
that be?"

slashdot - Poor Vision? There's an App For That

"Researchers at MIT's Media Lab have developed a smartphone app that
allows users to measure how poor their vision is (myopia, hyperopia, and
astigmatism) and receive a corrective prescription. The user peers thro-
ugh a $2 optical adapter at the screen of a smartphone. The app displays
lighted bars, and prompts the user to adjust the display until the bars line
up.

Repeating this with bars in different locations and orientations allows the
vision distortion to be determined to within about 0.4 diopters using a Ne-
xus One. The iPhone 4, with its higher-resolution display, should be able
to improve that to 0.28 diopters. This could have broad application in the
developing world, where experienced opticians and diagnostic equipment
are hard to come by."

Slashdot - Training an Immune System To Kill Cancer

"Doctors removed a billion of his T-cells — a type of white blood cell that
fights viruses and tumors — and gave them new genes that would pro-
gram the cells to attack his cancer. Then the altered cells were dripped
back into Mr. Ludwig’s veins. At first, nothing happened. But after 10 days,
hell broke loose in his hospital room. He began shaking with chills. His
temperature shot up. His blood pressure shot down. He became so ill that
doctors moved him into intensive care and warned that he might die. His
family gathered at the hospital, fearing the worst. A few weeks later, the
fevers were gone. And so was the leukemia. ... In essence, the team is
using gene therapy to accomplish something that researchers have hoped
to do for decades: train a person's own immune system to kill cancer cells."

Today I found out around 85% of humans only breathe out of one nostril at a time

"For instance, a study in 1988 showed that breathing through your right nostril significantly increases blood glucose levels, while breathing through your left nostril has the opposite effect.  It is speculated from this that abnormal nasal cycles, such as breathing through your right nostril for many years without a switch, may be one cause of diabetes.

Another study in 1993 showed that when you are breathing through your right nostril you will use significantly more oxygen than when breathing through your left.

Most interestingly of all, yet another study published in 1994, showed that when you are breathing through your left nostril, the right hemisphere of your brain will be more active or dominant and vice-verse when you are breathing through your right nostril.  This can be a handy thing to know as the right hemisphere of your brain is your “creative/imaginative” side, while the left hemisphere of your brain is your “logical” side.  So forcing breathing through one nostril or the other can actually affect the way you think at a given moment."

Your Laptop Could Be Killing You: Electromagnetic Poisoning in the Digital Age

"According to researcher, doctor, and author Robert Becker, the cells in
your body use electromagnetic signals to communicate with one another,
regulating vital functions and helping to maintain homeostasis. Therefore,
the introduction of artificial electromagnetic radiation frequencies interferes
with the specific frequencies required for the body to function optimally."

r - Taking 3 slow, short walks of 5 minutes each reverses harmful effects of prolonged sitting for 3 hours

a condition over the long term that shares with prolonged sitting a number
of similar, negative health outcomes such as hypertension, hypercholestero-

"Hoarseness is a term that describes abnormal voice changes. When
hoarse, the voice may sound breathy, raspy, strained, or there may
be changes in loudness or pitch (how high or low the voice is). The
changes in sound are usually due to disorders related to the vocal
cords that are the sound producing parts of the voice box (larynx)."

My name is Igor Korolev, and I am a resident physician in psychiatry at the
University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital (previously a D.O./Ph.D. candi-

"Because estrogen weakens the immune system, it's bad for the overall
'quality' of the woman. So only women with very good genes and very good
health can have breasts that are both large and symmetrical. Because it's
easy for parts of this to go wrong, you get lots of variability."

"Exposing your body to cold water has been promoted as a health tonic since

report on the health and wellbeing effects of the 'cool challenge' - a 30-day
event in the Netherlands that involved more than 3000 people taking daily

A chronic inflammatory process that occurs in some, but not all, older people may trigger cardiovascular problems, a new Stanford study shows. Part of the solution might be found in a cup of coffee.

y - Bye-bye fillings! Alzheimer's drug lets teeth repair themselves

"The human body is able to heal small amounts of dental damage, by acti-
vating the tooth contact stem cells in the tooth's soft inner core, known as
the pulp. In situations such as tiny cracks or fissures, these cells are stimu-
lated to differentiate into specific tooth cells. Known as odontoblasts, these
cells can then make new dentine and replace the area that is damaged."

u 70 posto slucajeva, kasalj u 60 posto slucajeva, bolovi u misicima u 38,4
posto slucajeva, te teskoce s disanjem u 31,2 posto slucajeva. Ako se
simptomi pogorsaju tijekom drugog tjedna ljudi bi trebali otici u bolnicu,
smatra Peng. Taj je tjedna kljucan u tome hoce li se stanje pacijenta
pogorsati ili poboljsati."

Reporter's Notebook: Life and death in a Wuhan coronavirus ICU

"In the third week, keeping some of these acute patients alive might require
extraordinary intervention. For this group, the death rate seems to be 4 per
cent to 5 per cent, Dr Peng said. After working his 12-hour daytime shifts,
the doctor spends his evenings researching the disease and has summarised
his observations in a thesis.

The doctors and nurses at his hospital are overwhelmed with patients. Once
they don protective hazmat suits, they go without food, drink and bathroom
breaks for their entire shifts. That's because there aren't enough of the suits
for a mid-shift change, he said."

r - Maria Theresa of Austria had her children inoculated against smallpox after the epidemic of 1767

"It started off with a guy who wanted to get rich by peddling his own type of
vaccine. He falsified data in a study he wrote. He got caught and lost his

false. So they latched on to that. In the past 5 years or so, the Russian troll
farms have been peddling it as well causing the anti-vaxx movement to grow.

It is crazy how all this has happened in the past 20 years.

y - Drinking up to 5 cups of coffee a day has no long-term dangers and
could even reduce risk of chronic illness, according to a review of 95
studies on coffee-drinkers

"Coffee is associated with a wide range of health benefits, including a lower risk
of obesity, since the caffeine it contains can boost metabolism and intensify the
calorie-burning power of the digestive system.

... Caffeine can also increase mental focus and also benefit brain health,
particularly as we age -- caffeine appears to be linked to a decreased risk of
Parkinsons. Coffee, in moderation, is also linked to a lower risk of depression
and suicide."
