r - Sugar addiction 'should be treated as a form of drug abuse'
"According to researchers from Queensland University of Technology (QUT),
excessive sugar consumption increases the dopamine levels in a similar way
to other drugs such as cocaine.
The study found that long-term consumption of sugar will eventually cause
a reduction in dopamine levels. That means, they say, people need to con-
sume higher and higher levels of sugar in order;to reach the same reward
levels and avoid mild states of depression." |

pnas.org - Dynamic neural activity during stress signals resilient coping
"Consistent with this finding, greater neural flexibility signals in the VmPFC
during stress correlated with active coping ratings whereas lower dynamic
activity in the VmPFC also predicted a higher level of maladaptive coping
behaviors in real life, including binge alcohol intake, emotional eating, and
frequency of arguments and fights." |

r - Scientists Discover Key Identifier for Suicide Risk
"Our latest research provides further evidence of the role of inflammation in
a person's mental state. It shows that suicidal patients have reduced activity
of an enzyme called ACMSD which results in lower production of picolinic acid,
an important molecule for brain protection. We now have a much clearer
indication of the biological mechanics behind suicidal tendency." |

r - I did so much acid I almost died
"Nobody gets addicted to acid. It's unheard of. When people trip, they stay
generally keep the fuck away from it for several months. It can be a very
overwhelming experience, noncommunicable, and utterly alien." |

y - 4 Hours in Huntington: how the heroin epidemic choked a city
"She's battled drug addiction for 20 years, starting with pain pills she got for
an ankle injury at 16. Her mother was an addict too, she says, and it didn't
take long to start crushing and snorting them. She turned to heroin about
three years ago, when law enforcement cracked down on the painkiller trade
that had ravaged Appalachia, and pills became harder to find." |

r - High Hitler: how Nazi drug abuse steered the course of history
"German writer Norman Ohler's astonishing account of methamphetamine
addiction in the Third Reich changes what we know about the second world
war"
"Unlikely as it sounds, it was Ohler's friend, the Berlin DJ Alexander
Kramer, who first put him on to the idea. He's like a medium for that
time, says Ohler. 'He has this huge library, and he knows all the music
from the 20s. One night he said to me: 'Do you know the massive role
drugs played in National Socialism?' I told him that I didn't, but that it
sounded true - and I knew immediately it would be the subject of my
next book." |

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is involved in the reward system, movement, focus and motivation. There are 5 different types of dopamine receptors (proteins that activate biological signalling pathways) and each has a different role.
Dopamine D1 and D5 receptors in the nucleus accumbens are a major part of reward signalling. When dopamine binds to these receptors in the nucleus accumbens, the feeling is rewarding, like after eating a tasty food. |

r - There may be no such thing as internet gaming addiction
"There may be no such thing as internet gaming addiction. People play
excessively not because they are hooked on gaming itself, but because
they feel unhappy about other areas of their life, according to a study
that followed thousands of online gamers over six months." |
