r - The timeline of President Trump's ties with Russia lines up
with allegations of conspiracy and misconduct

"One such hypothetical source, who would have been well-placed at the
crossroads of several of the information vectors drawn upon in Steele's
dossier, died in unusual circumstances on December 26 2016: a point in
time when the dossier had been so broadly diffused in DC, London and
Rome, that we may assume it had landed on Putin's desk."

INFORMATION AVOIDANCE: HOW PEOPLE SELECT THEIR OWN REALITY

"Drawing on research in economics, psychology and sociology, Carnegie Mellon University's George Loewenstein, Russell Golman and David Hagmann illustrate how people select their own reality by deliberately avoiding information that threatens their happiness and wellbeing."

University of Washington professor started studying social networks to help people respond to disasters. But she got dragged down a rabbit hole of twitter-boosted conspiracy theories, and ended up mapping our political moment.

r - What is the most interesting thing you've found in the JFK files?

"Dorothy Kilgallen: She went full force into the JFK investigation, not believing
Oswald acted alone, publicly stating that in her column. She allegedly carried
a file around with her at all times, and told her close friend she was 'going to
release the largest story of the century, and blow the entire JFK case sky-high'."

likely to believe fake news, finds a new study, which suggests the
inability to detect false information is related to a failure to be actively
open-minded

r - TehSoupNazi provides compelling evidence that Fox News was
created mainly to protect corrupt Republican presidents from being
taken down

"Today television news is watched more often than people read newspapers,
than people listen to the radio, than people read or gather any other form of
communication. The reason: People are lazy. With television you just sit --
watch -- listen. The thinking is done for you."

----

This excerpt leaves out the other part: Nixon the paranoid creep convinced himself that the only reason Watergate got so big and forced him to resign was because the nightly news wouldn't stop covering it*. This led to his paranoid delusion, fed by sycophants like Roger Ailes and the standard conservative victim complex, that the media was full of his enemies and was out to get him. The rot spreads from the head so it wasn't long before this became standard GOP orthodoxy. Not only did this give rise to the myth of the liberal media but also to proposals to fight it. These proposals included getting rid of the fairness doctrine (Reagan did this in the 80's) and starting a "GOP TV" network to "combat the liberal lies!" GOP TV became Fox News, with Ailes as its founder. So yes, Fox News' origins are rooted in the fact that Nixon blamed the media for having to resign (i.e. being a corrupt president getting taken down) and not being above the law.
*This is his own revisionist thinking; Watergate was a slow burn that took literally years to become part of the daily news cycle.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jan/27/american-exceptionalism-has-to-die-david-neiwert-on-the-rise-of-the-far-right

We've dug ourselves a really deep hole - David Neiwert on the rise of the far right

For several decades following the Great Depression, when capitalism and liberal democracy teetered on the brink, Republicans and Democrats agreed to defend democracy, and defend the values of democracy because it benefited them all by following basically FDR's program. Now, we've lost that because conservatives have decided they are no longer willing to submit to any kind of government run by liberals, Neiwert says. The current conservative movement has decided it no longer wishes to be part of a liberal democracy.

r - Don't fall for it...

"The technique described above is Engage / Entangle, from a list (sometimes
(and likely falsely) attributed to Karl Rove) which made the rounds of the
Internet years ago:

Engage
Demand an elaborate, time-consuming comparison / analysis between your
position and theirs.
Entangle
Insist that the Liberal put their posts in their own words. That will consume the
most time and effort for the Liberal poster."

r - Cambridge Analytica Psychologist Advising Global COVID-19 Disinformation Network Linked to Nigel Farage and Conservative Party

"Patrick Fagan was lead psychologist for Cambridge Analytica. Yet, since
August 2018, Hoar has acted as sole counsel advising Facebook on its
compliance with UK electoral law. He is also advising Sean Bailey and the
Conservative Party's (postponed) campaign for the London Mayoral and
Greater London Assembly elections."

r - Conservatism is associated with a lesser ability to distinguish between true and false

"Study suggests that conservatism is associated with a lesser ability to dis-
tinguish between true and false claims across a wide range of political issues.
Socially engaging truthful claims tended to favor the left, while engaging
falsehoods disproportionately favored the right"
