r - Scientists Discover Key Identifier for Suicide Risk

"Our latest research provides further evidence of the role of inflammation in
a person's mental state. It shows that suicidal patients have reduced activity
of an enzyme called ACMSD which results in lower production of picolinic acid,
an important molecule for brain protection. We now have a much clearer
indication of the biological mechanics behind suicidal tendency."

r - LPT request: How to not be such a procrastinating, lazy fuck

"So to avoid procrastinating, I started making a conscious effort to recognize
and remind myself that even though I might not want to do these things in
the moment, they are ultimately the things that give me a sense of accomp-
lishment and happiness in the long term."

r - Depression in Young People Affects the Stomach. Anxiety effects the Skin

"As a physician, abdominal pain has to be one of the most frustrating things
to treat. So often people get put through too many tests to establish a physical
cause of their pain, only to turn up nothing."

waitbutwhy.com - Why Generation Y Yuppies Are Unhappy

"With a smoother, more positive life experience than that of their own
parents, Lucy's parents raised Lucy with a sense of optimism and un-
bounded possibility. And they weren't alone. Baby Boomers all around
the country and world told their Gen Y kids that they could be whatever
they wanted to be, instilling the special protagonist identity deep within
their psyches."

r - What are signs that someone is secretly unhappy?

"These things could mean someone is secretly unhappy: * Not smiling
much. * Just going along with what everybody else thinks without voicing
their own opinion. * Low energy. * Tiredness. * Changes in appetite.
* Faking their mood to appear happy * Doing impulsive things (perhaps
to distract them) * Addictions to things (perhaps to keep them happy)
* Putting down others/negative comments * Always seeking attention
(may be neglected/lonely). * Desperate to talk to you (lonely maybe)"

y - The 'craziest' thing Michael Phelps did to become the greatest
swimmer of all time

"I'll be the first one to admit a mistake when it's made. It's the only way
you're able to move on and learn from that mistake. By no means has my
life been absolutely perfect," he said.

r - LPT: Stress Management (Lessons learned from a USAF fighter pilot)

"I was forced to go through stress management training during my enlist-
ment, given by an active duty fighter pilot. Turned out to be the best train-
ing I've ever been through. I don't have his slides, so my version will be
the abbreviated one. Also, I have added some things like analogies and
such that helped me understand things better. I'm going to fit the real
meat and potatoes of the training into the first section, then afterwards
I might into more detailed descriptions of this or that. It's gonna be long
winded, but if anything just get the middle section read and you'll be good
to go."

Suicide Afflicts Farmers at Rate Shockingly Higher Than All Other Jobs

"According to a new study in the Journal of Rural Health, suicide has plagued
farm operators and workers at a rate several times higher than the overall
working U.S. population.

During the 19-year period between 1992 and 2010, 230 farmers took their
lives, at an annual rate that ranged from 0.36 to 0.95 per 100,000. American
workers as a whole, in contrast, never exceeded 0.19 per 100,000 during that
span."

intrusive thoughts - a common symptom of anxiety, post-traumatic stress

https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/8do3gm/hi_im_sara_anderson_an_anxiety_specialist_ama

Hi Reddit! I'm Sara Anderson. I've been a psychotherapist for over 17 years working in different settings from large group practices to a small private practice. I'm now focusing on my own online video therapy practice where I specialize in anxiety, especially in women. I use a ton of humor and compassion in working with my clients. I combine mindfulness training, relaxation strategies, stress management techniques, anxiety management skills, trauma-informed care, and client-centered therapy to help my clients actualize their hopes and dreams.

r - The Vagus Nerve May Carry Serotonin Along the Gut-Brain Axis. SSRIs may activate vagus nerve dependent gut-to-brain serotonin signaling

"Historically, most experts and consumers thought fluoxetine worked by
inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, and that the antidepressant
effects of this drug occurred solely from the "neck up." However, there is still
a surprising amount of uncertainty about how SSRIs actually work."
